meetingwithsubcontractors.jpgSo you've finally found your groove as a work at home mom and things are going well with one exception: you're not earning enough to take care of you and your family or to meet whatever revenue goals you had established for your business. Some women in this situation find they're not attracting enough business because they can't handle certain types of work clients bring to them. Others find that it's not the work they're unable to do, it's the volume. Here's a solution for WAHMs trying to build a manageable but profitable business: Outsourcing.

Outsourcing happens whenever you decide to subcontract some of your work to increase efficiencies in your business. This can really boost your revenue. For example: let's say you're a writer and your client would also like you to incorporate interesting graphics in the document that you are preparing for his website.

Instead of saying "sorry I don't do that" you can calculate the cost of having that graphic work done by someone that specializes in layout and graphic design and add that as an extra service you offer to your cilent at an extra cost.

Now your client is not only getting the writer that she wants but the graphic design element she thought she'd have to shop around for. Of course she'll be happy to pay you, her trusted service provider, the extra money required. Almost instantly you've become a service provider with added value.

For some of us the thought of outsourcing some portion of a project might feel like we're giving away some authority or control over our work. That would be about the furthest thing from the truth as it takes good management control and a sharp business acumen to know where your strengths lie and how to manage the contributions of outside contractors.

Now you'll be able to focus on those aspects of your business that require your expertise and gradually outsource more and more of your business that can be handled by subcontractors at a profit.

This may mean that you can start taking on more clients. So not only are you able to charge more for added services (factoring in your profit and the cost of your subcontractor) but you will be potentially handling a larger volume of business because you have the manpower and strategic flexibility to do so.

So the next time you feel overwhelmed at the work you have to do, but underwhelmed at the revenue generated by your business, take a step back. Then think about those areas of your business that can be outsourced to increase efficiencies, your client base and ultimately your bottom line.
