One of the most often asked questions of moms who have decided that they would like to work from home is..."What will I do?" There are a lot of people selling all sorts of schemes and ideas to moms with an open ear but I firmly believe each of us knows deep down what our calling is. Whether or not there is a market for it, is another question. But you have to start with your vision for what it is you want to do. I want to share with you a story that I hope will get you thinking about your future and the steps you need to take to get there.
My story is about an American woman who wanted her work to be
her passion. The first part of her life she ran a jewelry business
that I think included antiques and crafts. Later on she decided she
wanted to continue doing this work (minus the antiques) but she wanted
to do it somewhere tropical...Jamaica.
So...she successfully got
her son into college and then set about downsizing so that she would
have the resources to create a situation where she could work in her
preferred home environment - Jamaica. Remember she's not Jamaican she
just loves the island and people there.
She eventually built a
home, and to augment her home-based custom jewelry business (not to
mention pay the bills) she built her home as a tourist guest house.
She lives in one part; and her guests live in another (upstairs
apartment).
I share this story (and the pictures of her home
"Jamaica Jewel") to hopefully inspire you to put into place your plan
for working at home. It has to begin with your vision, and then will
need a realistic and clearly defined plan for how you'll get there.
