Uncomfortable

redface There are a few reasons why your breast feeding experience may be bothering you. Are you and baby in a comfortable position? If not this causes baby not to latch on properly and increases unnecessary pull on you. Many moms comment that the football hold is the best. In this hold you turn the baby to where their feet is under your arm facing backwards, with their head and body cradled by your hand and arm. This allows you easier movement of your other hand to help position baby easier. Many women with larger breast find this position more comfortable. You want to be sure you are in a relaxed position before beginning as stopping before having to switch breast only causes baby to get fussier and it is harder on you.

Never be afraid to ask advice from other moms and your doctor.

It was a struggle with both of my children to nurse. My daughter would only nurse out of one side and my son was just plain picky. The first time I nursed my son it was in the NICU and I was so nervous. Maybe he just always thought of that everytime he went near me. He always wanted the football hold which I totally hated so soon I trained him to lay down with me...Then we would both be so comfortable that we would fall asleep. I miss those days of snuggling with him....rolleyes

Pillow supports

I came into the category of " moms with larger breast", and it seemed harder to find the position that suited both me and the baby. I was afraid I´d smother them! Both boys were good feeders, but it wasn´t always easy getting myself sorted out, and at times I did have to "grin and bear it". One thing that helped me was that I had bought one of those v shaped pillows to support my back in pregnancy. When feeding I used to place the pillow with the v facing in, almost wrapping it around my waist, and then place the baby on top. It seemed to work, holding in them in a position where I was more comfortable, and able to relax more.

I love the football hold... I also liked laying down on my side with the baby there. It was much harder with twins to do either... basically impossible or awkward if co-feeding. But I ended up nursing them one at a time after they were tiny infants just because I liked being able to give the one-on-one attention.

It's very good advice for moms to seek advice if they have problems with breastfeeding. I think lots of moms experience guilt, thinking they should just naturally be good at breastfeeding. It isn't always that simple.
