- Tote bag or storage container- there is nothing more aggravating than losing track of that pen you had just a minute ago. And finding small items in a bed, loaded with pillows and blankets while you can hardly move is no easy feat. Having small items confined in a bag or storage container makes it easier to keep track of them. You may find a bag to be more convenient as the handle can be looped over a corner and pulled up easily when needed.
- Nail file and clippers
- Lip Balm
- Hairbrush and elastic bands- It is difficult to keep up a presentable hairstyle while in bed. These are nice to have these available for unexpected company or any time you need a pick-me-up.
- Cosmetics and mirror- some women just feel better with their make-up on.
- Tissue and/or wet wipes
- Moisturizer- this is a great time to moisturize like crazy. Keep your hands, arms, feet and belly soft. Also, for those who are going without make-up, you have more time to moisturize your face (very handy in dry climates or winter)
- Pens and pencils and a small notepad- to keep track of visitors, gifts, questions for your doctor/midwife, etc.
- Address Book/PDA- keep your contact information close at hand so that you can keep up with your correspondence or keep in touch with your work/insurance company
- Phone/cell phone- keep both nearby
- iPod or MP3 Player- even though you can't dance, it's nice to have the music. You'd be surprised at how funky you can get with just ankle and upper body movements.
- Remote Controls- for the television and DVD player. (also consider extra batteries in case yours runs out!)
- Books, Magazines and Puzzles (crosswords, SuDoku?, etc.)
- Spill-proof cup/water container
- Hand-held Video Games- While they may not interest everyone, they are great for passing time. There are a variety of games including puzzle-type games that can keep you engaged at entertained. You may be able to borrow one from a friend or family member's teenager.
- Laptop computer- even if you didn't have one before you may be able to borrow or rent a laptop during your bed rest. This is a wonderful way to spend the day. You can keep in touch with friends and family, research pregnancy and bed rest information, shop for baby and yourself, and join an online support group for moms on bed rest.
While this list is by no means exhaustive, you may find one or two items you hadn't considered before. Above all, remember to infuse a little variety into each day.
