This article looks at why caffeine is not a good drug for children, tweens or teens and some of the other reasons to limit kids' caffeine consumption that include the affect on behavior, obesity, nutritional deficiencies and the link with dental cavities.

This weekend I stumbled across the Power Cell Energy Balls on display at our local Supermarket and found it to be quite alarming. The company is selling a product (Power Cell Energy Balls) that looks like a gumball from a prominent red gumball dispenser (Power Pump), which unless you take the time to read the fine print, you won’t realize that you are giving your child caffeine, extra vitamins and muscle building compounds—in a product that looks like it is made for children, but is not recommended for children.

I am always confused when I hear that there are parents that do not attend these “pow-wows” with their child’s teachers. After all, has anyone ever, when they ask their children what happened at school today, got any response other than “nothing” or “I can’t remember”? These brief meetings can let you in on their secret knowledge…what DO they do all day, and HOW do they do it?!

Obesity is rapidly becoming the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Recent statics indicating that 3 out of 4 Americans will be obese by 2015 are alarming to me as a physician who has seen the impact of obesity, diabetes and heart disease on patients.
These trends are concerning to me as a mother of two young daughters because my daughters will be young teenagers by 2015. This is a mere 8 years away. Plus I want to be one of the 1 in 4, or the 25 %. who are not in the overweight category.
