Just when you thought your pregnancy that resulted in a 10 pounder was the most tiring, most difficult 40 weeks on record, this momma of twins in North Carolina has most legendary pregnancies beat, hands down.
On June 17th, Joey and Erin Maynard welcomed their twins, Sean William and Abigail Rose at Winston-Salem, North Carolina hospital via cesearan section.
Any birth of twins is special, but few rewrite the record books like the Maynard twins did.
Sean and Abigail now rank as the heaviest twins ever born in North Carolina, and the second weightiest US twins born in the last century. At birth, Sean William tipped the scales at 10 pounds 14 ounces, while his sister, Abigail, not to be outdone, registered a whopping 12 pounds 3 ounces, bringing their grand total weight to 23 pounds, 1 ounce.
The Maynard twins fell just four pounds shy of the heaviest twins on record, a set of twins with a recorded combined weight of 27 pounds 12 ounces from Arkansas born back in 1927. However, they did best the North Carolina state record of a combined weight of 18 pounds 10 ounces.
During an interview on NBC's Today show, Erin Maynard recalled an ultrasound she had a few weeks prior to her scheduled C-section where the technician insisted something was wrong with the equipment. When asked how she managed the pregnancy, Erin said, "I had a lot of help from my family, so I could just sit there and grow."
Erin and Joey are also parents to a son, 2 1/2, who weighed in at just over 10 pounds at birth, too.
According to a spokesman for Forsyth Medical Center, the babies, born two minutes apart, are "in excellent condition".
