Romantic myths abound of what it feels like to become a mother for the very first time. The first months after the birth of a woman’s baby is often perceived as an eternally blissful period—a maternal symbiosis—in which a woman croons to her newborn while breastfeeding him each day and basks in the joy of being a mother. As a result, many women expect a fairy tale experience of the transition to motherhood. But the truth is that entering into motherhood is like entering into another culture. Most women have no idea what to do when they come face-to-face with their newborns for the very first time and are surprised to discover just how overwhelming and demanding becoming a mother can be. This is usually when culture shock sets in. Tags: culture shock mother motherhood transition to motherhood postpartum newborn women new mother |

I have always believed that new moms deserved a forum of their own to deal with their own unique issues. Well, that forum has arrived! It's called "New Motherhood." It's a new stage on Type-A Mom and I am the new Editor of that stage.
I am very excited to be an editor at Type-A Mom, and to be the editor of the "New Motherhood" stage. In this stage you will find articles on becoming a mother, how to prepare for the transition to motherhood, and what you can expect as you take your first steps on this amazing journey.

But the process of becoming a mother begins at conception and continues after the birth. A woman doesn't "become" a mother, she "transitions into" a mother. There are specific stages involved in this major life transition that are easily identifiable.

What does it mean to be a mother? There is a tendency in our culture to think that once you give birth you are a mother. But since becoming a mother myself, I have learned that becoming a mother is a process, not an event. You give birth to a baby, but you become a mother. It takes experience, hard work, love, joy, and plenty of mistakes to become a mother. But even more importantly, it involves a shift in a woman’s sense of who she is now that she is a “mother.”

All the pregnancy books & magazines will give you a dozen different
lists of the things you need for the hospital and for the homecoming of
your new bundle of joy. This is a REAL list of the true essentials (in
no particular order) necessary to survive the first two weeks home with
your little one. Diaper, wipes, & baby soap are a given so don't
expect to see them here.
