Navigating airport security is tricky enough. If you are traveling with a toddler the experience can seem impossible. It is hard enough to figure out what you can and cannot carry onto the plane. When you throw in the stress of packing for your toddler and corralling the entire family through the security checkpoint, even the most organized mom can be reduced to tears. The following are hints, based on the current guidelines, to help you quickly and sanely navigate airport security with your toddler. The current security procedures, while designed to protect us, have also created an unpredictable and frustrating situation for many parents who are traveling with children. Those with toddlers, in particular, rely on a fair amount of planning and flawless execution to keep our little travelers happy. Anticipating every situation isn’t possible but these hints are designed to help you prepare for some of the more common obstacles you may encounter when navigating airport security.

Packing:
• Creams, Gels and Medications- No need to check the diaper cream. You can bring a container of 3 ounces of less of any cream, gel or medication. All containers must be placed in one quart-sized, zip-top, clear plastic bag, which must be removed and declared at security. The contents may be subject to further tests by security personnel.
• Drinks- Under the current regulations travelers are allowed to bring formula, breast milk or juice for your child. Drinks can also be purchased once you’ve passed through security, however the prices are significantly higher than if you brought your own. Bring an empty bottle or toddler cup in the event that the rules change suddenly.
• Snacks- Gel-type candies are still prohibited but other pre-packaged snack foods are allowed as long as they are no more than 3 ounces (i.e.- yogurt and Jell-O).

Security Screening:
• Allow plenty of time to get through the security screening process. While it may seem stressful to have to fill extra time on a concourse, it is even more stressful to usher an unwilling toddler through security only to have to run to catch your plane. In general, allow at least two hours to check in and get through the security checkpoint. If you find yourself with extra time once you’ve passed through, you can use the opportunity to let your toddler burn off some energy before boarding the plane.
• All passengers are subject to screening. It can be scary for some children. Explaining the procedure to your toddler beforehand may allay some of their fears.
• Dress your child (and yourself) so that the screening process will be easier. Avoid belts, metal and buckles. Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off.
• Check your toddlers pockets before you get to the airport to avoid any unexpected finds.
• All bags will be screened.
• If you are taking a stroller with you to check at the gate be aware that the stroller will be screened too. Your stroller must be collapsible so that it can be passed through the screening equipment.

Remember that all rules are subject to change depending on the current threat level. For an updated list of what is permitted and prohibited to take with you check the Transportation Security Administration’s website .
