Summer is here! Some of the best childhood memories are built around the magical summer months. The warm weather and longer days offer more opportunities for play and exploration. Along with all of the fun summer activities your toddler will enjoy, there are also new dangers for parents to be aware of. With some preparation and attention to detail, you can assure your toddler a fun, safe the summer. And you can relax and enjoy with him.
In The Sun
Sunscreen should be used every time your toddler goes outdoors. Even on cloudy days. To protect your toddler’s skin from UVA and UVB rays you should pick a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours and after swimming.
In addition to sunscreen you can protect your toddler’s skin by dressing him in tight-weaved, lightweight cotton clothing and a wide brim hat.
If at all possible avoid going out to play during the hours at which the sun and heat are at their most intense (10 am- 4 pm).
If your toddler is out playing during those times, assure that he takes time to rest in the shade or go indoors periodically to cool off. You may have to enforce mandatory cool down periods for those energetic toddlers who love to be out running and climbing for hours on end. Cool down times can include a messy craft in an outdoor shaded area.
Most importantly, make sure that your toddler stays hydrated. Offer plenty of cold water to replace the fluids that your child is losing in the heat.
Water Safety
It is imperative to supervise child at all times when they are around water. With toddlers it is important to be aware of all water sources in your yard and other areas where your child plays. Empty kiddie pools and water pails when not supervised. Even a dog’s large water bowl can tempt toddlers.
The fence around pool areas should be 5 feet tall with a self-closing and self-latching gate. Regularly check the fence line for integrity and proper closing and locking.
Keep rescue equipment and a portable or cell phone nearby.
When in the water with your toddler stay within arms reach and never leave your child alone in the pool. A good rule of thumb when there is more than one child in the pool is to have one adult for every 2-3 children.
Bugs/Animals
Check patio/play areas for wasps and bee’s nests. They are often in hidden areas with small openings like under railings and in swing sets.
Mosquitoes and other bugs are especially troublesome this time of year. West Nile Virus and Lyme disease are becoming increasingly prevalent across the US. Using an insect repellent that contains 10-30% DEET is recommended for children over 6 months.
Other ways to reduce your toddler’s exposure to insects is to dress her in light colored clothing, avoid perfumed/scented products and avoid areas with stagnant water. Be sure to check your toddler for ticks after hiking and playing outdoors.
Other Dangers
The barbeque area: Lock up lighter fluid, lighters and charcoal. Be aware of grill scrubbers & pointed utensils. Keep children away from the barbeque when hot. During large gatherings/barbeques be aware of choking hazards and what your child is eating.
Yard- Mowers, trimmers, fuel and chemicals should be stored out of reach of child & locked. Also be aware of the recommended wait period before allowing child out side after spraying. Keep children indoors while mowing. Be sure to remove any tools or equipment you’ve used for yard or outdoor work. Tools, rope, stakes, etc. can be dangerous in the hands of a toddler. A fenced yard best way to keep children in their own yard, carabiner clips under some gate latches can keep kids from opening easy lift latches.
Be aware of slides on the play area. Hot metal, and plastic, can burn little arms & legs
One final consideration for summertime safety: there is no better time to take a CPR class or a refresher course.
