Pre-Teens

Pre-teens... they're too cool to be children, and still haven't quite reached the teen years. Pre-teens are trapped between two worlds, and it can be quite interesting navigating the wilds of pre-teen parenting. Here are tips to stay on course, and have fun on the journey.

Summer break is half-way over for most of us, and if you're anything like me, the magic wore off exactly 4.7 minutes after it started. I am a SAHM, so school dictates the bulk of our schedule 9 months out of the year. Then June comes along and says, 'Hey, you! Suck it up and wing it!' WHAA? We need some consistency around these parts, or these moody, hormonal beasts are going to perform a coup and go all Lord Of The Flys on my unsuspecting butt.

My children will attend school for the last day tomorrow. After that, I am on my own for 2 1/2 months. I have three kids who really like to fight with each other, so I have to keep them as busy as humanly possible. I also have to feed them occasional, so we're on a budget. This summer, we are joining our local library's book club. In light of that, let's talk about another great series of books for pre-teens, shall we?

My kids are avid readers. My husband and I have been reading to them since before they were born, and lord almighty has it paid off. They love to read. I’m not sure if that comes from an actual desire to expand their little minds or if they’ve simply figured out that, “Mom, I want to read” is the one stall-tactic at bedtime that actually works. Either way, I’ll take it. Now that they're finding their own taste in books, I'd like to share some of the fabulous tween books we've found for them in a series of posts. Today, I'm featuring the terribly clever Angie Sage!

We are an affectionate family. My husband and I make a point to kiss in front of the kids, hold hands when we're out together with them; things we honestly NEVER do when we're alone. We've been together for 12 years, and we just don't NEED to make out all the time anymore. But we want the kids to see us being affectionate. We feel like that's important. It's working....

(If you will indulge me, I would like to share a letter written to my son for his 10th birthday. Because sometimes, it's not sharing advice that gets us through. It's sharing our heart. Crossposted from my personal blog ...)

A decade ago today, my whole life changed.

I think, in hindsight, I was probably too young and too naive for such a change, but I asked for it, and hot damn did I ever get it. As of 11:20-something on April 14th, 1998, almost two weeks past when it was “due” to happen, not one thing about me has remained unchanged.

And thank god for that.

Congratulations, moms and dads! You made it! You survived the greatest test of a parent's love and selflessness...the Chuck-E-Cheese days. Did you ever think it would end? I mean, really....how much bad pizza and fluorescent pink bears can one parent endure? Not it's time to navigate the pre-teen birthday party days.
