The website Accessible Chicago was started and continues to be run by Catherine Marsden, who wanted to share resources with others who need wheelchair accessibility in Chicago.
Catherine's daughter, Helen, was the inspiration for the site and the organization. Taking Helen on family outings became difficult as she outgrew baby-sized wheelchairs and strollers. It seemed like a natural progression for Catherine to start asking for accessibility, and then telling others what she found.
There are reviews and resources on the site now, but Catherine's own life has changed somewhat. I read her blog post from April 2007 just today and learned the sad news that Helen died peacefully almost a year ago. I believe she was about 13 years old.
Accessible Chicago is still going, and Catherine has been posting from time to time. It is the sort of site that will get stronger as more people contribute to it.
If you are a special needs mom and live in or visit Chicago, I hope you will look into Accessible Chicago and add your two cents' worth.
