Just in the news this week was a story about children being injured while wearing Crocks, a brand name of shoe. These kids had foot injuries from the rubber type clog shoe getting caught in an escalator and pulling the child's foot into the moving stair. The injuries mentioned in the news story included lacerations, bruising, and missing nails. Ouch! Very painful, very traumatic and clearly a preventable accident.
The pediatricians that I have talked too agree that those injuries can occur with those types of shoes, not necessarily just that brand. The cheaper plastic clog type shoe can cause the same injuries and so can flip flops. So now here is my band wagon......
Flip flops and these plastic shoes are useful and have their place during spring and summer months. They are great for the pool, the beach, and going to and from the showers while camping. They do not protect feet from injury on a moving escalator, nor from puncture wounds from nails or sticks. I personally don't think they belong as attire for school age children who have outside recess or who go to a school where there are stairs.
Stairs, crowds of rowdy children, and flip flops don't mix. But who holds the responsibility if a child gets injured wearing this type of shoe? The manufacturer of the shoe? The escalator company or the mall? How about the company who made the nail that punctured the shoe? And when , as a parent, do we give ourselves permission to stand up for what is a better and safer choice for our children instead of what is in style?
