Independence Day is nearly upon us in the US. Every one is looking forward to backyard BBQs, trips to the beach, parades, and of course the fireworks. But with young children all of the excitement might not be so wonderful. How can you enjoy the July 4th with your preschoolers safely?
Fireworks are one of the biggest concerns for young children. Many of
the type that you can buy yourself are just not safe for children. They
can burn and damage children's hands, arms, or even faces. Be sure that
you keep your children away from any fireworks. Carefully explian that
the fireworks are not toys to be played with, and be sure to keep them
out of reach and out of temptation.
Even so-called "safe fireworks"
such as sparklers can burn skin and clothing. Preschool aged children
should not use these without an adult's supervision.
During
day time activities young children can easily become dehydrated. July
is a very hot month in many areas and too much excitement and play
during the heat is not good. Be sure to have plenty of water on hand
for your preschooler to drink. Sugary drinks such as juice or soda can
often worsen dehydration, water is the safest choice for drinking.
Young children can also burn easily. Be sure to use a sunblock made for
children while they are outside playing. More importantly, move your
preschooler to the shade often to keep the direct sunlight off of them.
A wide brimmed hat can also help to keep the sun from burning their
skin.
If you are planning on visiting the beach or a pool during the
fun be sure to check out my water safety tips for preschoolers also.
With a few precautions Independence Day can be both safe and fun for
your preschooler. As long as you know what the dangers are and avoid
them you can have a great day.
