My kids are avid readers. My husband and I have been reading to them since before they were born, and lord almighty has it paid off. They love to read. I’m not sure if that comes from an actual desire to expand their little minds or if they’ve simply figured out that, “Mom, I want to read” is the one stall-tactic at bedtime that actually works. Either way, I’ll take it. Now that they're finding their own taste in books, I'd like to share some of the fabulous tween books we've found for them in a series of posts. Today, I'm featuring the terribly clever Angie Sage!

In my house, the days of That’s Not My Dinosaur and Curious George are a fading memory. No longer will a Sandra Boynton book do the trick. They’re ready for some meat, you know? And though every single mom friend you have will give you a list the size of Schindler’s when your baby is born of awesome books to read, no one really helps out the Tween moms.

Allow me to come to your rescue.

I have one kid who read absolutely nothing but non-fiction until about 2 years ago. I have another kid who read absolutely nothing but Magic Treehouse books until about 2 years ago. This has created a Book Crisis in the home. Hand-me-downs weren’t cutting it, and there were only so many times I was willing to read the Encyclopedia Britannica aloud before bed.

The solution? Series books. To get them out of their respective ruts, I had to go find books that came in collections. There are always your standard Harry Potter and Magic Treehouse books, but there are more. Loads more.

Septimus Heap Box SetToday, I am featuring Angie Sage. Know her. LOVE her. She writes the ever popular Septimus Heap books: Physik, Flyte , Magyk and Queste. They are a series, can be purchased in a box set, and I have no clue what they are about. Why? Because my son will not put them down long enough to let someone else read them. He reads and re-reads them over and over again. They were his first real introduction to fiction, and he’s hooked. And I am hooked on tea and Lost re-runs at 8:30 now.

Araminta SpookieWhen the oldest got his Septimus Heap books, the younger one wanted some new ones, too. Right next to the Heap books on the shelf at the bookstore were another set of books with equally catchy covers…Araminta Spookie books. Guess who writes these books, too? That’s right, my hero Angie Sage. Rather than covering the dragon/fantasy world of the Heap stories, these books are paired down for the younger crowd (7-9). The are about a young girl who lives in the coolest haunted house in the world. The main character is a girl, but they are very much so equal gender stories. I have read those books, and I’ll admit it….I L.O.V.E them. They are witty and colourful and captivating. Even the older, geekier son enjoys them as light reading. There are My Haunted House, The Sword in the Grotto, Frognapped!, Vampire Brat and Ghostsitters . The series is still growing fast, so there will be lots more to read (I Hope!)

Next week, I'll feature another author that my kids and I have come to love, and who excites them and keeps their noses in books! For now, check out Angie Sage's wonderful books for tweens...and happy reading!
