The NICU, or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, is a frightening place for parents. There are many issues for NICU parents, ranging from understanding NICU milestones to bonding with a baby that is under someone else's care to the challenges of establishing breastfeeding in situations where you might not be allowed to nurse. Consult this NICU Survival Guide for tips and advice.

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, I've been doing a lot of reading on autism in preemies. To a casual observer in preemie circles on the net, it seems like far too many of our babies suffer from problems that fall somewhere on the autism spectrum. Tags: preemies autism sensory integration |

The issue of siblings in the NICU is very important to me, because when our 31 weeker was born, she had an older sister who had just turned three. In fact, we had celebrated her third birthday while I was in the hospital on bed rest. The NICU rollercoaster was very emotional for her, even at such a young age. A baby sister was an abstract enough idea before she was born, but when she arrived and was taken away someplace where Riley couldn’t see her, things became more difficult. The Zaky is a special ergodynamic therapeutic pillow that can be used to comfort or position a NICU baby. The Zaky was designed by a former NICU parent after her own NICU experiences with her NICU son Zachary. For me one of the most difficult thing as a NICU parent was to leave my daughter at the hospital in the care of others and not be there to watch over her. The Zaky Hand produced by Zakeez inc. is an easy way of providing comfort to your NICU baby when you are not able to be with him or her. With the Easter Season on us very soon, I am reminded of our Easter adventure many years ago with my youngest daughter when she was admitted shortly after birth to the Intensive Care Nursery (NICU).
Even though it has been many years (my daughter is now in Kindergarten) when Easter rolls around I am once again reminded of our NICU experience.
This article shares a special Easter Wish and Gift for NICU Parents who currently have a child in the NICU.

In Ahmedabad, India, a mother went into premature labor setting on a toilet in a moving train. In India the toilets are placed over an open hole in the floor of the train. She was traveling with family but everyone was asleep when she went to the bathroom around midnight.
