What ever day of the year it is celebrated on, and it differs across the world, Mothers Day is traditionally a day of giving thanks to our mums, and as the day was adopted by more countries and the festival spread, each nationality created its own set of traditions. So in the UK and USA whilst we will be giving flowers and cards, here are what a few other countries will be doing to celebrate!

Mother's Day in India

In India Mothers Day is a very big event. During October the Hindu’s celebrate Durga Puja. Durga is the name of a goddess who protects the people from evil and is also popularly known as The Universal Mother. Celebrations can last up to 10 days, with cards and flowers being given to mothers as well as invitations to dinner cooked by other members of the family.

Mother's Day in Yugoslavia

Imagine this if you will…Mother’s day, or "Materice," is celebrated in December, and in the early hours of the morning traditionally children will sneak into their mothers bedroom and tie her to the bed, only releasing her when she promises to give up the hiding place of the small gifts she has bought them!

Mother's Day in Sweden

Here small plastic flowers are sold, similar to the red poppies sold in the UK for Remembrance Sunday. The money made from sales is put towards sending mothers with many children on vacation.

Mother's Day in Japan

In Japan the festival is called “Haha no hi” Children will draw pictures of “My Mother” and then enter them into local exhibits. These displays will then travel every four years to many different countries, teaching children how their family lives differ to others.

Mother's Day in Mexico

“Dia de Las Madres” is recognised on the 10th May every year. Tradition see children coming to their mothers’ home on the 9th May and on the 10th there are Masses and fiestas held in celebration of the mothers.

Mother's Day in New Zealand

Mother’s day is celebrated on the same day as the US here in New Zealand, whose celebration of this day was brought over from America. Because of this, its traditions and customs are similar with card giving and small gifts, but because of the far more clement weather conditions Mothers usually celebrate with Picnics and BBQ’s on this day.

Mother's Day in France

The French see Mother’s Day, or Fete des Meres,  as more of a family celebration, where all the family will sit down together for a meal, where a special cake resembling a bouquet of flowers is presented to the mum. It is typically held just a couple weeks after American Mother's Day, or in late May or early June.
