Every year for Mother’s Day (and Christmas, and Valentines Day, etc)I see at least a half a dozen commercials a day for beautiful and uber expensive diamond jewelry advertised as a gift for the special woman in your life. The problem is, I don’t know very many families who can afford to shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars on a holiday gift.Still, most moms I know love jewelry, so here are six jewelry gift ideas for the moms in your life that won’t break the bank.
What ever day of the year it is celebrated on, and it differs across the world, Mothers Day is traditionally a day of giving thanks to our mums, and as the day was adopted by more countries and the festival spread, each nationality created its own set of traditions. So in the UK and USA whilst we will be giving flowers and cards, here are what a few other countries will be doing to celebrate!
Here are some basic facts about the origins of Mother’s Day, including some lesser known facts about Mother's Day traditions, and other remarkable statistics!
My mum and I have a great relationship. We talk about pretty much anything, and who knows where I would be without her, but when it comes to Mother’s Day I can spend hours scouring the card racks for a verse or quotes that says “Thanks for everything” in a way that reflects our relationship. We don’t really DO hearts and flowers, or cute teddies, or elaborate verse. So I have turned to the internet to find some words that I can add to a card (sans flowery verse) of my own, Mother's Day quotes and observations that will bring a smile to her face and let her know I appreciate how important the role of a mother is.
Mothering Sunday is, for me, a day of rest (as a mother) and thanks (as a daughter). It is perhaps the one day of the year where we can demand a cup of tea in bed – or even breakfast for those possessing a constitution strong enough to A) stay in bed whilst chaos ensues downstairs and B) consume the food prepared.
Of course it wouldn’t be the same without the
obligatory flowers from Dad, the handmade cards from the kids. It is
almost worth the extra time spent clearing up after the breakfast and
card making mission that all dads seem to be able to turn into an
extreme sport. But do we know where the tradition came from, other than
perhaps long ago down-trodden mothers finally throwing their hands in
the air and shouting, enough is enough for one day?
There comes a time in every girl’s life where the prospect of getting the glue and glitter out of the cupboard does not fill us with creative joy that it used to. Happily this usually coincides with the time our mothers have had their fill of everything heart shaped and glittery. It is time to look for some more adult, but none-the-less thoughtful ways of saying thank you, Mom, you’re the best. Here are some Mother's Day gifts with a difference.
