"What kind of crazy B movie did I find myself in? Attack of the killer Cheese Curls? Where's my agent?! Oi!" The new big screen adventure, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" in the wildly popular at-home phenomenom Veggie Tales serves two great big green thumbs up! Catchy Music, meaningful lessons, snappy dialogue and an overall good time makes this one film your whole family will love, not just your kids!
As a kid at heart myself, a new mom, and the wife of an independent screen writer, I see a lot of films. While many of the movies targeted for children have done big numbers in the box office, there aren't many that have come out in recent months that I found overly impressive.
Hollywood has been displaying a growing trend in children's films' to over-exaggerate and over-simplify targeted content to a degree that almost borders on insulting. While I understand that trends in media and technology have somewhat changed the climate that children are craving, this "dumbing down" of on-screen character films and everyday cartoons is a trend I for one, am not fond of.
While in the past Veggie Tales has mainly been a religious series that revolved around religious messages and bible stories, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" is a film that remains autonomous and friendly to any belief.
While the film enforces general "good for everyman" type of lessons, it does so without repetitive overstatement and preachy explain-it-to me dialogue. The films' moral messages include faith in your friends, pride in yourself, the courage to do what's right, and that you can do anything you set your mind to if you just believe in yourself and stay focused.
Snappy dialogue and music are also incredibly catchy and the degree of humor used in the film are very mature while at the same time being kid-friendly. Bright colors, a touch of absurdity, and enough sincerity to make the film very well rounded, this film is a great time for every member of your family. While the film is entertaining for your kids and I found that my three month year old daughter was bopping and humming along with the other kids in the theater, I found that it was actually entertaining for me too! How rare!
As parents, we endure sitting through a lot of not-so -thrilling TV and movie times for the sake of our children, but be assured "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" is not one of them. The dialogue is adult, the content is solid, and the film is a breath of fresh air from the ordinary! I give it two thumbs up, and encourage you to take your whole family to see it before it leaves big screens!
