In my experience by the time you hit 25, Valentine's Day is only really significant to those in the greetings card, chocolate or flower selling business, and us time-hardened mothers have come to expect little more than an apology from a forgetful husband. However for kids, it’s a great opportunity to indulge in all things heart shaped, for school friends or parents alike. So here, with only a simple cookie cutter, are some ways for them to get creative and spread a little happiness!
Heart Shaped Homemade Soaps
You Will Need:
Heart shaped cookie cutter
2 lbs clear glycerine
Wooden skewer
Red food colouring
Wax Paper
Baking tray
Melt the soap in the microwave, and then add a few drops of the food colouring until you reach the desired depth of colour. Use the skewer to stir.
Line the baking tray with the wax paper, making sure you go up the sides.
Pour the soap into the tray and then allow it to set.
Use the cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes.
The soaps can be presented en-masse or individually to class mates! Pop into cellophane gift bags and tie with ribbon for a special touch.
Butterfly Valentines Day Card
You will need:
Heart shaped cookie cutter
Red construction card
White construction card
Red pipe cleaners
Decoration materials…glitter, sequins, paint
Glue
Sticky tape
Using the white card cut a shape for the butterfly body - this should be about the 5cm long.
Using the cookie cutter as a template cut out 2 hearts from the red card. These will create the wings. Stick them onto the body, attaching them by the point of the heart.
Cut the pipe cleaners into two lengths and then attach to the head of the butterfly using sticky tape.
Write your message on the wings, the name of the recipient etc.
Decorate to your hearts content!
Melted Crayon Hearts
You Will Need:
Heart shaped cookie cutter
The ends of all your children’s wax crayons, or a new pack if you’re feeling generous!
Line a baking tin with wax paper, taking care to cover the sides as well.
Put the crayons ends into the tin, mixing the colours well so when they are melted them will create a rainbow effect.
Place the tin into a pre-heated oven, and bake until melted.
Allow to cool; then using the cookie cutter cut out hearts.
These can be stuck to card blanks using double sided sticky tape or attached to string and used as crayon still!
