All children like to get their hands dirty and if they can learn something about the food they eat as well, all the better. Here are two great ways of introducing kids to the wonders of nature, and they can even eat their efforts in the months to come!
Potatoes in a Bucket
You Will Need:
2 potatoes
1 x egg box
1 x bucket
Compost
Take a potato and place it in an egg box with the “eyes” upwards. When it starts to shoot, check it and choose 2 strong shoots. Remove the others.
Take an old bucket, punch some holes in the bottom and cover the base with stones to allow for drainage, then 1 third fill with compost.
Place your spuds in the compost with the shoots pointing upwards, then cover with soil but DON’T fill the bucket!
In a few weeks your shoots should have broken through the soil. Cover them again, and repeat this until the bucket is full. Remember to water your potatoes as you fill with soil.
After a while, white flowers will appear. Keep watering, and after about 4 months they will die. This is the sign your potatoes are ready! Tip out the soil, and see how many have grown!
Cress Shapes
You Will Need:
10 sheets kitchen towel
Cookie cutters
Cress seeds
Lay 10 sheets of kitchen towel on a plate.
Using a teaspoon, dampen the sheets with water.
Place cookie cutters onto the sheets.
Sprinkle cress seeds inside the shapes, being very careful to go up to the edges but don’t disturb the shapes.
Remove the shapes CAREFULY.
Place the plate in a light place, and water every day AROUND the seeds, not on them so you don’t disturb them.
When the cress is about 6 cm long, you can cut it off and either put it in a salad, or a sandwich!
