These simple but fun experiments will introduce younger children to the basics of science, and at the same time they are simple and easy to prepare. Using everyday, household products you can teach your child some amazing things! Equipment
  • Plasticine or play dough
  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • Vinegar (or lemon juice)
  • Normal kitchen equipment, such as spoons and beakers
  • Small funnel
  • Balloons
  Volcanic Eruption
  1. Make a volcano shape out of plasticine or play dough, or even old newspapers crushed together, with a hole in the centre to allow the volcano to “erupt”.
  2. Place a small container with 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and a little red food colouring under the volcano.
  3. Quiclky add around 3 tablespoons of vinegar, stand back and watch your volcano “erupt” with red foam.

This one is messy, so stand the volcano on an old teatowel, or a pile of papers.

Rude Balloons

This is a variation on the above experiment, but much beloved by little boys in particular due to the rude noise that the gas makes as it escapes the balloon!

  1. First, place the tube of the small funnel into the balloon.
  2. Then add a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda.
  3. Quickly add a good glug of vinegar, and then hold the lip of the balloon shut.
  4. As the products react, the balloon will swell up and fill with gas.
  5. After a few moments, slowly release the build up of gas, producing a distinctive sound!
These simple experiments show that when bicarbonate of soda (alkaline)  and vinegar (acid) are combined, the two chemicals react, producing carbon dioxide. This is a gas which needs to escape, in one way or another!
