One of the perks of being a working wife of a stay-at-home dad (SAHD) is the food. From morning pancakes to late-evening popcorn parties, the best of the best SAHDs make food fun. Or at the very least, creative. And they encourage the children to participate. In my experience, I've found that generally, SAHDs fall into two categories ...

CATEGORY #1: The culinary whiz
SAHDs in this category know the difference between a light cherry reduction and a sloppy joe on toast. They can appreciate the unique tastes of children and often cater to their little teammates by creating fun twists on old favorites. They enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, creating new recipes and surprising their families with innovative dinners.

CATEGORY #2: NOT the culinary whiz
SAHDs in this category need a bit more help. Their idea of a grilled cheese sandwich may be taking two slices of bread, adding cheese in the middle and sticking the whole thing in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Don't despair if your husband is not a culinary genius. As long as he can serve your children healthy, balanced meals while you're at work, and put something meaningful on the table when you all sit down together for dinner, then you're in great shape.

As some breadwinner moms I know will say, consider yourself lucky if your husband can put something in a saucepan, heat it up, transfer it to a plate and bring it to the table. This may sound condescending but it's not meant to. I know that my own father, and my brother for that matter, still aren't sure what a stove is or how a person goes about using it.

Some working moms feel like it's not their kitchen once a SAHD enters the scene. Think of it this way: it's still yours if you want it to be (you're just sharing it during the hours while you’re away at work). Be comforted in knowing that he's feeding your children and stocking the kitchen cabinets while you're away. Here are a few more tips that might help you create mealtime bliss:

  • Be open to his creativity in the kitchen. Someday you might look at him with fresh eyes and wonder where he ever came up with the idea of pairing roasted apples with braised chicken.
  • Resist the temptation to point out everything wrong that he's doing in the kitchen, or everything he's not doing the way you would like it done.
  • Give him room to succeed on his own. If he needs help, he'll ask you. Otherwise, leave him alone, enjoy the food and relax.
