Beginning recycling, photo copyright scol22 on stck.xchngEvery year, tons of material that could be recycled isn't, and it just ends up filling our overwhelmed dumps and roadsides. Most people think it's difficult to start to organize a recycling center at home but with creativity and commitment it's easy. You will feel better too because you will be doing your part to care for the earth as well.

Find a convenient place in your home or apartment for the center. It doesn't take much room for your recyclables. You can use your garage, a storage closet, corner or under your kitchen sink. They are all great places. Find and label the containers you will be using to store the recyled materials in. Plastic buckets, storage containers or even trash cans will work depending on the amount of room you have available.

Get your family involved in the process. Make sure they are aware of what can and cannot be recycled. Teach them the differences between the aluminum can container and the tin can container. While they are doing their weekly chores, teach them to be on the lookout for recyclable material that is lying around the house, and encourage them to place it in the proper recycling containers.

Ask your family if they have any ideas for reducing the amount of recycled material that is used by your household. Take them with you to the recycling center in your neighborhood so they can see what happens first hand. Show them that they can reuse things in the house in their own efforts at home. They can use a cardboard box for a bin for all their shoes or a coffee can be used for a piggy bank.

When your children realize you can both save and earn money by recycling and reusing things, they will have developed an environmentally healthy and thrifty habit for life.
