Many families are taking vacations for Spring Break. While some will be doing some grand vacation to Europe, others will take mini-trips around town. Whatever type of "Spring Breaker" you are, here are a few tips to help make your trip a bit easier...
Make a packing list. This simple (or long!) list will help ensure that you have everything you should need for the trip. Remember to include items such as sunscreen, personal hygiene, and any diapers/wipes and baby food you may need. This list should be started at least a week or two ahead of time so you can add to it as you think of items you will need.
Print directions or add destinations to your GPS unit. Make sure you have addresses of all the places you intend to visit with directions to them if you know you will be leaving from other locations directly to the attraction. It will help your travel go much smoothly! Having a local map is a great idea in case you need to change your route too.
Charge all electronics or buy extra batteries. Your camera will need extra batteries and your cell phones need to be charged before you head out. Also add the chargers to your packing list!
Grab a few items for the kids. You will need plenty of snacks and drinks. You will also need things to keep them busy. Bring a favorite toy or two, favorite pillow/blanket and a few other activities such as games or crayons and coloring books. If you have a portable dvd player be sure to bring plenty of movies!
Prepare a first aid kit. Kids tend to get hurt, so be prepared for it. Your first aid kit should be destination specific, but the basics include; bandages, antibiotic cream, aloe (for burns), sunscreen, hand sanitizer, cold packs (you can buy the instant kind from outdoor stores or just keep them as cold as possible), tylenol, bendryl and any other needed medications.
Wake up a little early on travel day. Getting a late start will add stress to your travel. Wake up a bit earlier and start your day on the right foot. You won't have to rush and you may end up arriving earlier than expected so you have more time to enjoy the trip.
Your trip can be a great experience if you let your family guide the activities. Try to avoid overscheduling activities. Just enjoy the trip! Have a few planned activities, but leave plenty of room to improvise or just relax. Vacations are meant to be time together as a family, so do it! Relax a little and watch your children enjoying the activities and just being with you.
