It's amazing how quickly kids can learn. You go from simple one syllable words like mama and dada to complete sentences in what seems to be overnight. It is easy to stress over your child's development and wonder if they are progressing as they should. What can you do to ease your fears?

At my toddler's 18 month check-up I made it a point to discuss speech development with my pediatrician. I was concerned that, although my son had several words in his vocabulary, he was behind the curve from a developmental standpoint. Fortunately, I have an excellent doctor who said "stop worrying!".

All children develop at a different rate and worrying will not help. Focus on things that you think will help him learn and eventually he will be having full conversations with you.

I did as the doctor advised and walked into the 2 year old check up with a little boy who could identify and say all the basic colors, could count to 10, and was not only speaking words clearly but sentences as well. The trick, I discovered, was repetition.

Anytime we colored...we named each of the crayons as we put them away. As we left the house, we counted each of the steps we walked down. As we got dressed we named what we were putting on and what color they were. As we took a bath we named each of the body parts we were washing.

We basically made learning a part of our everyday life. We tried to encourage him to learn something from every task we did.
