Ever want to wear that slinky little black dress out while nursing an infant? Or what about that day job work attire? It's all about going out into the world without a the leakage that could give you more than a bit of embarrassment. And after getting a sitter lined up to be with the baby, it's about time we get out there and have a little fun isn't it?
Here's my low-down on which breastpads work and which don't.
After extended nursing my son for two and a half years, and now nursing my 6 month old daughter, I know a thing or two about breastpads. One could argue a little bit too much. But one thing that I do know, it's all about keeping the milk where it belongs, and me confident that I can have a little fun with no worries. Here's the details on the five brands of breastpads that I'd tried, what worked, what didn't, and of course what I recommend. Though, we all know I am only one mother, opinions may vary.
- Lilypadz Silicone (Re-usable) Breastpads - Where were you when my son was born? Seriously, these little beauties, once you get the hang of them, are ideal for the dressing up dresses, the camasoles, and for even swimming suits! Once you learn how to put them on, there's no seams, folds, or even a hint of breastpads to be seen. Just be wary, you'll need to practice putting these on beforehand. It can be a bit tricky (if not impossible with one hand). And I wouldn't wear them over a few hours, milk can get caught in the tips and spill when you pull them off. But really, they have 5 pumps from me, they let me feel a little less stuffy when I'm out and about.
- Lansinoh Disposable Breast Pads - My breastpads of choice. They hold the enormouse amount of milk that my let down, well, lets down when my little nursling is eating on the other side. And I can be assured no leakage will go through the backside. There is a little protective lining. Some complain of a little folding with these when wearing a t-shirt or blouse. And yep, I've seen it on myself. Especially if I've worn them a little too long during my day. Bring an extra pair or two in your purse. Just change them out if you are feeling they are getting a bit too full.
- Evenflo Disposable Nursing Pads - A close second in the race for favorite. They hold the milk and don't fold as much. But the protective backing isn't quite up to my liking. And they tended to want to stick to my breast a bit. A bit nagging for sure, but not enough for me to completely bash them. I'd use them in a pinch.
- Washable Breastpads (any brand)- Personally, hated them. Maybe it was because I had such a let down with my milk. But, they don't hold what I have. Within one nuring session I had a circle on the other breast. Thank goodness I was at home trying them out. Sure they have the eco-friendliness in mind (you can wash them over and over and over), but I didn't want to have to wash my shirts just as much too.
- Medela Disposable Nursing Pads - These were my first pads. I have a Medela Pump so naturally went for their accessories. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. They leaked. Stuck to my (at the time) beat up breasts (first time mom, first time nurser)--and didn't stay in place no matter how hard I tried to position them. Maybe the contour was off for my breast, or maybe it was my lack of exprience nursing. Either way, I've never gone back to try and use them again.
Really, I am sure opinions on breastpads are a plenty. But from one mom to another, I was in need of a little guidance the first time out of the gate. Gleen some guidance on what worked for me and maybe (just maybe) it will work for you too. And hey, make sure you have a good time out and about without the baby. It's fun to have a little downtime. As long as there's no leakage!
