Shiny hair, photo by Caroline Hoos I get asked all the time how to get your hair to look shiny and healthy. Even my best friends tell me that my hair is so healthy. I just have to laugh because my hair is so NOT healthy.

Being a hairstylist means changing your hair a lot. Whether it be to change the color or cut, I tend to choose color, so my hair takes a beating.

So what I do to create the illusion of having healthy hair is to first use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I choose one for colored hair, since I really don't know what my natural color is anymore. Then I usually dry it without putting any product in it.

Once it's dry, I style with either curling iron or straight iron, then I add my product. I love any kind of shine serum or texture shine pomade. Put a little in your hand, you can always add more later, and rub your hands together until they're nice and shiny and the product is well distributed.

Then, tip your head to one side and just start smoothing it through your hair. Just a little at a time because if you put too much in, you'll just look like a greaseball.

So, you've distributed it througout your hair, now you can either take a round brush and brush through it quick or just run your hands over it and put it back the way you want for styling.

If I'm going somewhere windy, I usually add a light hairspray, but otherwise the pomade or smoothing serum is usually enough.
