Babyproofing for Crawlers

Is your baby crawling yet?  Mine is 9 months old (yesterday!) and he is just this week starting to have success with shoving himself around the floor - real crawling is bound to happen very soon and oh my I need to babyproof!!  Here are the things I need to do and some suggestions, whether you are a new mom or like me you are a mom of more than one child.

Baby Sawyer is my third baby - you'd think I'd be a pro at this babyproofing thing by now.  But to be honest my first two didn't crawl until over 9 months old and I went back to work at a year each time, so I didn't spend that many hours at home with them awake and getting into trouble so I was a little slack about it.

This time around though I'm not going back to work (and even if I was I reallly shouldn't be careless about baby proofing!!) and I need to get things in order.  This task is made even more challenging as a result of the million tiny little toys scattered throughout the house by the 4 and 6 year old.  You know, those toys that aren't for under 3's but the baby is drawn to as if they were magnets!

This is the list I need to get through this week, in order to get a little peace of mind for baby's safety:

  1. Cover all outlets (most are done already, but need a few more covers)
  2. Install cupboard latches
  3. Contain tiny toys to the playroom or the bedroom the big boys share
  4. Knob covers for bathroom doors especially
  5. Need a new baby gate for the stairs

I think that should cover it for me, many things I have covered simply due to protecting the older boys - although for many families you may also want to look at other things like:

  • Where are your cords for tv/appliances etc? Can baby pull them down?  Mine are up on a built in niche above fireplace so way out of his reach.
  • Do you have a pool and need a safety gate?
  • Are your window coverings safe?
  • Do you want to put corner covers on your coffee/end tables?

There's a lot to think about when you are preparing for a mobile baby/toddler instead of the sweet little baby who sits ever so nicely and plays with the toys he is handed, but it is so nice when they can go get their own ball instead of waiting for you to retrieve it for the 15th time!!!
