Fingerpainting is more fun with edible, homemade paint! What better way to spend a day indoors during winter rainy or cold months than making a fun mess in the kitchen with these non-toxic, easy-to-make paint recipes for children?

With little hands in paint, and then in mouths, parents have to make sure it is safe. Make your own paint with these easy recipes and you know exactly what is going in your kids' mouths.

Sometimes it isn't practical to send the kids outdoors to run and play, but the usual indoor activities can soon become boring for active children. Many parents are searching for inexpensive alternatives to large, costly toys. Also, concerned for the health and well-being of their children, parents want options other than television, video games and movies for hours on end. These paint recipes are edible fun for children that can get all ages involved in mixing up and using.

Edible Finger Paint

  • Light corn syrup
  • Food coloring drops in various colors

Put 2 tablespoons of the light corn syrup into a shallow bowl and mix with 5 to 10 drops of food coloring depending on the desired color intensity. Use thick construction paper or cardstock paper (we use a page from Mommy's sketch book at our house) and let children finger paint to their hearts' content.

It is easy for young children to learn about primary and secondary colors as they create their own fingerpaints, mixing the colors for themselves. It is one thing to tell them how blue and yellow will make green, but when children can get their hands dirty and mix it for themselves, it will be more memorable.

The best part? When the kids eat the paint, and you know they will, you won't have anything to worry about.

Tried and True Mommy Tip: Lay their papers on a cookie sheet to save clean-up time. Any enthusiastic painting that spills over the edges of their paper will be easy to clean up by simply running the cookie sheet through the rinse cycle in your dishwasher.

Edible Condensed Milk Poster Paint

  • 1 cup condensed milk
  • Food coloring drops in various colors

Did you know condensed milk can be used as a paint? It makes a beautifully glossy paint and, again, can be mixed up quickly as a color lesson. Let your little Picasso's grab a paintbrush, a cup or two of milk, and have at it! I love not worrying about whether they put their fingers in their mouths when we use these edible paints.

Tried and True Mommy Tip: Use a garbage trash bag to cover their clothing by cutting a hole in the bottom, and sides, of the bag to put their heads and arms through. Note - children should never be left unsupervised around plastic bags of course, as they are a suffocation hazard. As an art-time cover-up however they do very nicely.

Whether your children are painting with brushes, or fingers, using your own homemade paint brings a bit of artistic magic right into your kitchen!

avatar Now there's no reason to keep my little guy from painting just because we've run out of (more traditional) supplies. Good stuff, thanks for the tips!
