Mother's Day Tea, photo copyright Pontus Edenberg Every year, I put on a Mother's Day Tea for my students and their moms and/or grandmas! This is a special time when we show our love and appreciation for all they do. You don't have to be a teacher to do a Mother's Day Tea. Just get some moms together from your playgroup, PTA, or just your own and enjoy a special time together.

Menu Make it simple, but elegant. Raspberry iced tea, Mother's English Cookies, large fruit platter. For a beautiful and inexpensive invitation, each child can make a hand-print butterfly on a square lavender piece of construction. Print the invitation on top of the butterfly. Add a pretty silk ribbon.

Decorations think "pink." I like to put the light pink butcher paper on the tables with pretty pastel paper plates, forks and napkins. The centerpiece could be fresh flowers from the garden, or tissue paper flowers. To make tissue paper flowers, cut 5 8x8 tissue squares in a bright color. Stack evenly, tie together with a pipe cleaner in the middle. Fan out one square at a time until it is fluffed like a flower. Insert in a plastic vase or use as a corsage!

A inexpensive and cute gift would be for each child to draw or paint a Mother's Day Portrait.

These are really cute if they are hung on the back of the chair with the Mom's first name written on the bottom. Tip now is the time to shop for all the Valentine Day clearance items. Those heart candy necklaces are so cute when they have their mom wear them! Think hearts, pink and flowers.

I love to choose 2 read alouds to enjoy while the moms are sitting. Usually, we end up teary eyed. Here are some I have used in the past:

  • The Kissing Hand
  • Honey my Bunny
  • I'll Love you Forever
  • Mama, Do You Love Me
  • The Butterfly and the Lamb

After we have enjoyed our tea and cookies together, we get together and do a special craft.

Oriental Trading Company has darling inexpensive picture frame crafts that come in bulk orders. I like to use my digital camera to take a picture of each child and their mother.

I have them hold flowers and wear a fancy hat. This will be inserted later into the frame.

You can also make your own picture frame using popsicle sticks, tag board backing, silk flowers, buttons, and anything that looks pretty. Mom and child can do this together.

To wrap up this special time, I have all the children sing a few songs. The mom's can join in, of course. Here are some options:

  • One Light one Sun, by Raffi
  • The World is a Rainbow, by Greg and Steve
  • Beautiful World Artists Vary
  • Purple Kitty Charlotte Diamond
  • Sing M o m m y to the tune of Bingo!
  • You are my Sunshine
  • Read Poem In a Hundred Years....

I hope you enjoy your special Mother's Day. The kids love this day so much because it is their turn to thank their mommies for everything they give and do for them, and of course how much they love them!

avatar This does sound like a lot of fun. Even if you don't want to throw a tea party, I'll bet if you have a local tea house or tea shop, they might even have something special on Mother's Day... or you could just plan to go have tea that day. Love the idea!

Well this is a unique form of celebrating Mothers Day, it a great opportunity to gather and chat with our moms. Thanks for the suggestion, I will sure consider it as it's been a while since I last had a good peaceful tea chat with my mom and I am sure she would love it.
