Mother's Day Gifts I'll Never Forget

Some years, Mother's Day seems to go by like any other day. Of course, there's usually some sort of breakfast celebration involved, but beyond that, the demands of babies and toddlers tend to end any real chance for a day off. Some years though, something happens that makes Mother's Day extra memorable.

The first time I "celebrated" Mother's Day was six years ago. I can hardy believe it's been so long (on the other hand, it seems like this week started about 6 years ago . . .). The day started like any other. We were lounging in bed, relaxing like so many couples without any kids do on a Sunday morning. That was the last time we'd have that luxury though, because that Mother's Day was the day we learned we were expecting our first baby. I don't think either of us totally believed it. We'd just barely discussed having a baby, and there were the two lines on the home pregnancy test.

Considering the fact that it was Mother's Day, and we were calling our moms and grandmothers anyway, we decided it would be a fun time to spill the big news to everyone. Now fast forward 5 years, and that same little bundle of joy that made my "first" Mother's Day so special, decided to take Mother's Day into her own hands. As soon as she woke up, she creeped into our bedroom to ask what day it was. When I told her it was Sunday, she ran out of the room, saying she needed to tell Daddy something. The next thing I knew, she was dragging Daddy out the front door.

Daddy and our little girl returned about a half hour later, with breakfast, flowers, and a balloon chosen to match, each purchased under a 4 year-olds careful direction. I'm pretty sure she wanted the balloon for herself, but that's another story. Either way, it was a wonderful day, full of thoughtful gifts and lots of hugs.

Now with three little ones in the house, I'm sure our oldest will take charge once again. She's learning to write and piant this year, so who knows what she might have in store for me!
