As the weather turns cooler, finding ways to entertain the kids indoors can be a real challenge. Toddlers and preschoolers, especially, get bored with the same games, toys and movies and will get into anything and everything. Finding fun and creative projects for your kids is a great way to keep them entertained, but sometimes it seems you have nothing on hand. Here are a few surprising ideas for supplies that you can make from items in your kitchen. They’re even safe for the toddler set that likes to eat everything!

Colored salt

Colored salt is a great substitute for glitter and is fun and easy to make. All you need to do is mix a few drops of food coloring with a half cup of salt, adding coloring a drop at a time until you reach the color you want. Spread it out thinly to air dry or pop it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes to dry it out quickly. Put it in a shaker and use it to embellish pictures or art projects.

Finger Paint

Though messy, finger painting is always a favorite pastime for the littler ones. However, if your kids are like mine, the paint sometimes ends up getting tasted. Using instant vanilla pudding that has been colored with a few drops of food coloring is a great way to let toddlers and preschoolers have the fun of finger painting, without worrying a bit about them eating the paints.

Peanut Butter Play Dough

Peanut butter play dough is a tasty way to make fun creations with your kids. The added bonus is that they can eat their artwork when they are done! Combine 1 cup of peanut butter and 1 cup of honey in a bowl. Slowly knead in powdered milk until the mixture is of the consistency of play dough,

The next time you want to give your kids a safe and fun way to unleash their creativity, try one of these recipes. Your kids will have a great time and you don’t have to worry about them tasting their creations!
