Some people just don't know what to make of a stay-at-home dad. They
don't have conventional office jobs so they can't be men. They don't
have stretch marks so they can't be moms. They could be nannies but
that's not right, either. Like most myths, SAHD myths are generally
passed from person to person without any real basis for truth. I thought I'd share four of my favorite
myths.
Myth #1: SAHDs are Just Like Stay-at-Home Moms
FACT: SAHDs aren't dads in aprons. Don't call them Mr. Moms. Or
Mrs. Dads. They're swimming upstream against the sterotype of what a
stay-at-home parent "ought" to be. They're dodging the sly remarks and
endless stares. They're carving a rewarding life out of being the best
hands-on parent they possibly can be. Do they deserve that comment?
MYTH #2: Children of SAHDs Often Feel Different
FACT: 99.99% of all the children I know who have SAHDs love hanging
out with them. (The other .01% were too busy having fun to take the
survey ...)
Seven reasons why children love SAHDs
They make macaroni and cheese with chocolate milk.
They run around the playground without complaining or holding their chests.
They can become a human jungle gym in under three seconds.
They can turn virtually any rope into a Tarzan swing.
They wrestle on the floor.
They don't overly analyze, argue or negotiate.
They call 'em like they see 'em.
MYTH #3: SAHDs can't hold "real" jobs
FACT: So often, I hear: "When are you going to get a real job?"
directed at my husband. "I have one," he replies and then changes the
subject. It annoys him, to be sure.
The truth is that SAHDs do have real full-time jobs - being terrific
stay-at-home parents. The majority of them once held well-paying obs
yet left them to become SAHDs. What's more, SAHDs who do their jobs
well make wonderful role models. They show their children on a daily
basis the lessons of true sacrifice. SAHDs have typically surrendered
their own careers to take care of their children. They understand the
responsibility that comes with parenting and have stepped up to the
plate to do their jobs.
MYTH #4: Deep down, SAHDs would rather not be SAHDs
FACT: When little Tony is repainting the hallway a lovely purple
with the paint set Grandma and Grandpa gave him for his third birthday,
it's easy to understand how this myth got started. In any job, there
are good days and bad. Just like yours. The reality is that SAHDs who
have made the decision, along with their working wife and children, to
become a stay-at-home spouse are in it 100%.
The bottom line: Successful SAHDs realize that helping to nurture
the little people they brought into the world will pay bigger dividends
in the long-run that their paychecks. They want to support their
littlest teammates and have made the active decision to do so.
