I was delighted when I opened the package containing my Heirloom Candle. The packaging is beautiful, so from the start it felt like a special product. I prefer soy candles over traditional paraffin candles. Paraffin is a waste product of petroleum (read: limited resources from the oil industry). There are a lot of opinions out there that say we breath in toxic chemicals released when petroleum-based candles are burned. I tend to agree, but must say I couldn't find much hard evidence. Regardless, the paraffin process is a lot dirtier than soy.
Heirloom Candles Pros
I am somewhat sensitive to smells. Overpowering scented candles, potpourri, and fragrance sprays often give me headaches. This candle provides just the right amount of scent. I have the pomegranate and it smells delicious, lingering for hours.
There are so many eco-friendly elements to this product. The candles are made of 100 percent soy oil from American soybeans. As much as I love the packaging, I was worried that there was too much of it to be a green product. But, upon further research, I discovered the packaging is made of 50 percent or more post-consumer waste and the labels are printed with soy ink. Plus the glass containers are from domestic sources, so this is truly an American-made product.
Heirloom Candles Cons
This is a strictly personal con, but When it comes to style, I lean towards sleek, modern lines. I could do without the curly silver writing on the side of the glass. I suppose I can always turn it towards the wall, but I think the candle would be prettier without it. No one needs the name brand on an upscale candle such as this.
This isn't really a con, but I do have a couple of comments related to the shopping experience. It looks as though Heirloom Candles are only available on their Web site. They don't list any retail shops so I assume they aren't available at any other locations at this time. Also, estimated shipping costs aren't listed on the site and I wasn't able to determine the shipping without going through the full ordering process. As an online shopper, it would be nice to have that ahead of time. They are a bit pricey, but soy candles are always more expensive than paraffin candles. It's worth it, though, when it comes to safe environmental practices and the longer burn time soy provides. It's hard to compare the price to other soy candles out there though because I couldn't find the candle size on the site or on the package.
Heirloom Candles in Summary
I love these soy candles because they are so wonderfully eco-friendly. Starting with American grown soybeans and finishing with 50 percent post consumer waste packaging, the creators have kept the planet in mind. There is always room for improvement: higher recycled packaging and recycled glass would be nice additions. This can make everyone feel great about purchasing. The candle burns clean and the scent isn't overpowering.
With elegant packaging and a variety of perfectly balanced scents, the candles would make perfect holiday gifts for green moms. I recommend buying a variety of scents in the travel tin size for a cute sampler. You can buy online and have them shipped directly to the recipient.
