Summers can be long when you live over 3 hours from a beach. Summers can be endless with kids asking "what are we doing now?" every five minutes. It is possible to find fun places to visit closer to home. In the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. area, there are plenty of attractions in nearby Pennsylvania. Driving to PA for the day is a very doable day trip. It makes for a looonggg day, but hey, that is why a DVD player is a must in the minivan! Some places if interest in PA are Dutch Wonderland, Hershey Park, Sesame Place, Strasburg Railroad, to name a few.

  • Dutch Wonderland is a former family-run park, now run by Hershey Park, located in Lancaster. Dutch Wonderland is Hershey Park's smaller, less hectic sister park. The rides at Dutch Wonderland are geared for the 10 and under age group.
  • Sesame Place is a Disney-style water park for the 7 and under set. Located in Langhorne, PA, Sesame Place has everything that a true Sesame Street fan would want: costumed characters (Elmo, Telly, Big Bird), water rides, land-based rides, shows, and a parade down Sesame Street. Young and old will love the log flume rides and the lazy river. The highlight of the day is the Sesame Street parade: costumed characters and colorful floats cruise down through the neighborhood.
  • Another must-visit: Strasburg Railway in Strasburg, PA. The trains run weather permitting. The highlight for boys and girls alike is the Thomas the Tank Engine traveling show, which makes stops at Strasburg Railway about twice a year. Families ride in carriages attached to the Thomas train and enjoy lush countryside and working farms.Children are treated to a photo op with Thomas and Sir Topham Hatt.
Other places to visit in Pennsylvania: Hershey Park, the Crayola Crayon Factory, the Herr's Potato Chip Factory, the Wolfgang Candy Factory, to name a few of the many central Pennsylvania attractions.
